Furnace Pilot Light (fix) replace $10 thermocouple - watch this on your iphone too!

Hate it when you have no heat and everyone wants it you to buy a new furnace or spend $400+ on work you don't need. The fix may be simple and takes just a few minutes. I my case $10.88, 5 min and 3/8" wrench. Your furnace may be different. If your pilot light does not work you may want to try re-lighting it or replacing the thermocouple. If you smell gas call a professional! This is a do at your own risk project! One guy quoted me $400 another told me I needed a $1500 replacement furnace another told me to try the thermal couple. Honeywell 36" thermocouple @ Ace Hardware $10.88 it was worth a try and worked!

During the colder months of the year it is difficult to measure if the air-conditioning is working properly because even if the unit produces cold air when it is cold outside this does not ensure that the unit can perform the same when it is hot outside. Insure that the cable connecting the unit to the power supply is in good condition and properly connected. Note that central air units are connected to their own circuit box and supply cutoff switch. The Air-Conditioner should be inspected annually to make sure that the overall condition of the air-conditioner looks good and that there is not any debris, mold, or fungi growth on the coils of the unit that may prevent air flow or contaminate the house. Since the passage of Act 201 in late 2004 (immediately following Joe Preston's re-election in November 2004), both the rate and number of utility terminations have increased, jeopardizing the health and safety of those households without utility service, particularly in the cold winter months; and thousands of consumers have been denied payment arrangements because of restrictions placed on the PUC. Act 201 of 2004, known as Chapter 14, went into effect on December 14, 2004, amending the Public Utility Code. Chapter 14 now prohibits the Commission from establishing a payment agreement for customers who have defaulted on CAP (Customer Assistance Program) payments. Through October 10, 2008, the PUC has turned away 24144 CAP customers who wanted to have their payment arrangements reviewed. For non-CAP customers, Chapter 14 prohibits the Commission from establishing a second payment agreement if the customer has defaulted on the first. Since the passage of Chapter 14, the Commission has turned away over 47000 non-CAP customers requesting a payment arrangement. In total, as a result of Chapter 14, the Commission has been unable to assist 71516 customers (non-CAP and CAP customers) who were seeking payment arrangements. That is, since 2004, termination numbers for the electric industry have reached record levels, increasing 60.1 % during the period from 2004 to 2007. How I Cleaned a Richmond Water Heater Flame Arrestor Screen

This is a video that shows guts of Richmond 5V50-36PF Propane Water heater (mfg. date 11/2003) during my successful attempt to get it to work. Symptoms were that the pilot went out and could be relit, but when main burner kicked in, both pilot and burner would go out. I removed the sight glass to determine if the unit was starving for air or for gas. It would run without the sight glass, so I guessed my flame arrestor screen was plugged. I attempted to use compressed air, and a vacuum cleaner to clean the screen from inside the combustion chamber without success. I cut away the side of the water heater hoping to get access to the bottom, no luck. So, I figured, purchase a new water heater for $650 or just spend an afternoon unhooking mine, flipping it upside down and cleaning it out. As I guessed, the Flame arrestor screen had become plugged with dust. This resulted in the unit overheating and having the thermal release device meltdown making the Air Door go shut. The Thermal release device (glass vial filled with oil that bursts when overheated) must be procured from a certified repair technician. Note: The Integra anti sediment feature of the tank seemed to have worked great, as there was little build up in my tank. So, the question is, is it easier to replace the entire water heater or to repair the old one? It's sad that dust can ruin a perfectly good water heater. Clean burning waste oil heater based on Ozzirt's design

Pardon my messy garage I just finished another project for work. I like this heater because it requires no electricity and it burns very hot and clean. A couple more modifications and it'll be all done. I'm considering doing another one for the house. My gas bill was like 200 bucks last month or some ridiculous thing. DIY Engine Preheater

This is a preheater I made out of an ammo can, some flexible aluminum dryer hose, a dryer conduit nipple, pig putty, and an MSR XGK camp stove. The video demonstrates setting it up and lighting it. I got this idea from an Alaskan flyer who posted on a web forum. His design had two hoses, but my aircraft has retractable gear therefore ample room for one big hose through the gear door under the cowling. I built this primarily because I wanted a "simple" and very portable heating solution since I am based at a tie down with no electricity. Will also come in handy when away from home at a lonely strip ;-) Basically, I cut large holes around the bottom of the ammo can... over 1 inch diameter on the ends, the long sides I used smaller holes. Jig sawed a large 4 inch hole in the lid for the conduit nipple and used high temp pig putty (plumbers epoxy) to seal it in. I have a peice of safety wire to hold the dryer hose in place on the nipple, and also a loose one to hold it from extending when not in use. The hose is fairly limp when extended, it will extend to 5 feet... I just extend what I need and shove it up in the cowling. The camp stove will burn any kind of liquid fuel, gasoline (unleaded), white gas, kerosene, Jet-A, diesel etc. The bottle is 20 oz. and should last up to 2+ hours. Lighting the heater requires it's own prime and preheat. Give the bottle a few pumps. Let some fuel into the heater bowl, light it. Let it heat the jet and bowl up... when it starts "poofing ...
